DIY: Quiet down your Yeti SB150

The Yeti SB150 has a rather hard chain stay guard, which offers good protection for the chain stay, but does little to quiet down chain slap when the going gets rough. This can be somewhat concerning and with the new, better dampened protector designs other manufacturers are coming out with, makes the Yeti design seem a bit dated. Enough so that they have actually already launched a better protector for the new ARC HT, and I would not be surprised if they were to change the SB130/140/150/165 protector in the near future as well.

Enter the solution: the Santa Cruz Megatower chain stay protector! A nice, ribbed piece that will cost you around 30€ from you local SC dealer, or though the official Santa Cruz webstore. That is if theydecide to re-open it! I got mine through Larunpyörä.com

The Megatower protector comes with the acutal ribbed rubber part vulcanized to a plastic frame. In order to use it on the SB150, the rubber needs to be carefully separated from the plastic frame with a sharp hobby knife. The length needs to be adjusted by about 15mm from the back end of the protector, but other than that the size is good.

I installed mine by using contact cement to glue it on top of the original Yeti chain stay protector. This way it can probanly still be removed in the future, if necessary.

  1. Hi, I gave your method a go, but failed getting an adhesive to stick. So, I brought another one, and kept the rubber on the plastic protector, and cut about 5-6mm below the rubber, along the front. It now just clips over the existing protector, and holds firmly, added a couple of slim cable ties (Just in case). Thanks for the idea.
