DT Swiss ratchet EXP problems continue

I mentioned having problems with the new DT Swiss EXP ratchet skipping on my 240 hubs, which I reviewed some time ago. I thought getting a new moving ratchet and spring under warranty would help and solve the issue, but I was sadly mistaken. The hub still disengages completely at random and I have to pull the freehub body off and release it manually. A huge pain!

As of writing this I'm waiting for feedback from the retailer I bought my hubs from, Bike24. but I'm hoping I will get a new freehub body under warranty to rule it out as a cause to this problem.

  1. Hello, I purchased a brand new set of carbon rims with DT Swiss EXP hubs. I rode my bike about 10 miles when my rear hub began to 'skip.' We've shipped the rear wheel to DT Swiss for their review and hopefully the replacement or repair, as it is still under warranty obviously seeing that I had the hubs in my possession for less than a week. When I called the wheel builder I was told this is common of late and their thoughts were the hub manufacturer may overpacked with grease causing issues. Not very happy to be honest - especially seeing I had an option concerning hubs and I 'upgraded' to the DT Swiss (at a premium, of course) based on their longstanding history and reputation.

    1. I did the same: went from continuous bearing replcements of i9 to a sub-par ratchet system from DT. My previous DT 240S hubs have been flawless but this EXP is driving me nuts!

  2. This week I have experienced exactly the same disengaging issue you show in your video...., I had to walk back home for several km (didn't think of servicing a hub out in the trails!!)
As in your case, just servicing the hub at home solved the issue, but.... until when?
    Dissappointing....

    1. I can definitely relate and will be sure to post an update once the issue has been solved.

    1. I’ve had my repaired hub back for a few months and about 1200km. So far no big issues!

  4. I wonder if it could possibly be a spring tension issue or a grease viscosity issue? I wonder what the effect of changing from an 18T->54T ratchet would have on the skipping?

    1. Sorry for the late reply, but I'm mostly mobile these days and for some reason blogger comments don't work on my iphone.

A stronger spring would help, but ultimately the issue is the interface between the moving rathet and the freehub body. The fit is not correct. It's too loose, and allows the moving ratchet to tilt and bind in the freehub body.
