OneUp V1/Tranz-X/Brand-X cartridge dropper post maintenance tips

The Wintek cartridge is used by many manufacturers in their dropper posts, and while new designs have emerged since its introduction, there are still thousands of these droppers in service worldwide. Posts, which use this cartridge include:

  • OneUp Components V1 dropper
  • Tranz-X Dropper
  • Brand-X Dropper from Wiggle / CRC
  • Raceface Aeffect
  • OnOff Pija
The cartridge itself is very reliable, but even though the posts are quite basic mechanically they still need servicing. The picture below is of my Tranz-X 150mm dropper after 6000km of only lubing the top bushing every 1000km or so. As you can see, the grease is clearly contaminated with water and there was considerable rotational play in the keys.

Basic maintenance on these droppers is very simple: You remove the post from the bike, remove the saddle, remove a castle nut which holds the cartridge shaft in place at the saddle clamp, and unscrew the bottom actuator and collar. After this the post can be pulled apart for cleaning / maintenance.

OneUp have instructions on how to disassemble the post for maintenance on their website: V1 Dropper Post Service Instructions

Wear parts - OneUp V1 rebuild kit

The Problem with servicing these droppers has been the availability of spare parts. OnOff have indivudal parts available for their posts through Mondraker dealers, but OneUp actually list a complete rebuild kit for their V1 dropper. I'm happy to report this is a direct fit in all of these posts! It also includes the new version, harder wearing upper sleeve.

The brass keys are quite soft and easy to damage when removed from their recesses in the stanchion. The new keys should be installed with the smooth, rounded side up and will only fit properly this way. The middle key needs to line up with the protrusion on the lower bushing and these fit toward the back of the post. Again, the post can only be reassembled one way.

It's good to lubricate the shaft seal with slick honey or similar suspension grease before fitting it over the stanchion.

Conclusion

The OneUp V1 kit seems to have removed all rotational play from my well worn in Tranz-X post. Actuation is as smooth as ever, so I'm happy to report this rebuild works. The OneUp kit is also quite cheap at 20€, and available through their website or dealers. I got mine from Ridemore in Finland, who had it in stock.
